"Huge potential to go far": Remmert impresses in starting debut

Miron Muslic threw Peter Remmert into the deep end against Hertha and was rewarded. The talent impressed not only with his "crazy" assist.

Peter Remmert had played 25 minutes for Schalke's first team before the start of the 2025/26 second-division season. He more than doubled that number in Friday evening's opening game. After about an hour, Miron Muslic took the youngster off in his first start. Remmert already suspected on Wednesday that he would be starting in the first competitive game under the new coach. Muslic officially informed him the day before the match. "The boy has worked his ass off over the last six weeks, and that deserves to be rewarded," the Austrian explained on Sky's microphone, justifying his starting eleven mandate.
The 42-year-old made the right decision. Remmert set up Moussa Sylla 's first goal of the season with a display of willpower: He took the ball into the penalty area on the right half, robustly challenged Marton Dardai , and finally kept his composure while lying on the ground. "I didn't hear the whistle and saw Moussa and thought I'd try to play him in with a sliding tackle," explained the 20-year-old. He described the assist as "the craziest assist he's ever given."
But it wasn't just for this moment that Remmert received enthusiastic applause upon his substitution. The attacker symbolized Schalke's self-sacrificing performance. "Today, you could see Schalke's mentality. We got the arena on fire," said Timo Becker .
He runs at 35 km/h, weighs 90 kilos, you won't be able to knock him off his feet that easily.
The deputy captain wasn't surprised by Remmert's performance based on his impressions from training sessions and test matches. "He runs 35 km/h, weighs 90 kilos, you won't knock him off his feet that easily. Plus, he has a great shot and a great body. The boy has enormous potential to go far," Becker explained.
Other players from the Knappenschmiede also have potential. This potential will now be further exploited under Muslic. "You have to throw young players in at the deep end sometimes," said the S04 coach. If they pay it back like Remmert did, a euphoric atmosphere like the one on Friday evening could sweep through the Veltins Arena even more often.
